Spring Yard Cleaning Tips for Tucson: Local Resources

Spring is almost here!  Aaaaah, yes, the reason all of us Tucsonans can endure the dog days of summer.  Those scorching days are a distant memory as we look forward to beautiful warm days and the desert in bloom.

As we all anxiously await the arrival of spring, our attention is turned to the yearly ritual known as spring cleaning.  But spring cleaning is not isolated to the inside of our homes; our yards need our love and attention as well.

Overgrown vegetation, the damages of frost bitten plants, and an overall cleanup of our property are necessary to prepare for spring and summer.  And as we reach for the hedge trimmers and fertilizers, we may discover that our sheds and garages may need to be cleaned up as well.

Remnants from years of painting projects, the “fix-up” yard sale finds that never got done, and an accumulation of “stuff” has somehow managed to clutter up our garages and storage areas.  And as strong as the urge is to just close the door and deal with it later, take heart; there is help available.

With a little planning, the task may not be as monumental as you think.  Yes, both options require a little time and elbow grease, but once done you have two basic options: you can hire someone to haul away your clutter, or with a little planning you can save some money and dispose of it yourself.

By knowing Tucson's Brush and Bulky Pick Up Schedule, you can have all your vegetation, wood, furniture, etc., picked up curbside.  The website gives you a map and dates for your area so you can coordinate your clean up to coincide with the schedule for your neighborhood.

For disposal of paint, solvents, insecticides, etc., you can get more information by calling  the Pima County Household Hazardous Waste Program at (520) 888-6947 or go to the Tucson Clean and Beautiful Website for a list of sites and outreach locations for Hazardous Waste Disposal around the city.

Any clean-up project can seem like a daunting task at first, but when you focus on how good it will feel to actually be able to find those hedge trimmers without tripping over half empty paint cans, the rewards will far outweigh the effort involved. So put on your favorite tunes, roll up your sleeves and get to it!
