Create Your Own Artwork
You’ve been searching for the perfect artwork for your newly remodeled bathroom and can’t find
anything that has the feel and the colors you need. The answer could be as simple as paying a visit to your local art or crafts store and creating your own. And before you say “I don’t have any artistic talent”, don’t give up until you read on.
A trip to your local arts and crafts store can be either an inspirational trip or an overwhelming one, especially if you don’t consider yourself artistic. But don’t give up the ship just yet; mosey on over to the art paint and canvas area and put on your thinking cap.
You’ll see stretched canvases in all sizes and some with a one or two inch “gallery edge.” The “gallery edge” is what we’re after. The wrapped edge will come with staples or without. We definitely want them without.
We are going to make our artwork out of 3, 5, or 7 different canvases of varying sizes; we’re then going to glue them stacked artistically on top of one another. You may want to play with the shapes and sizes while you’re in the store to see just how many canvases you’ll need and what sizes will be best. Once you’ve decided, you might want to check pricing; sometimes the stores run specials and you can get the canvases at a significant discount.
After you’ve decided on the number of canvases and the size your overall art-piece will be, it’s time to think color. If you have swatches available of other colors and materials you’ve used in your room, bring them along to help with the color selection. For example, if you’re using a drapery or pillow fabric that has a print, then select those colors from the print to use on your canvas. We’ll paint each canvas a solid color. If you’re using three canvases, each canvas can be a different color, if you’re using five canvases, maybe two of the same color and if you’re using seven canvases, then maybe three of the same color.
Once you’ve chosen your colors and painted your canvases, it’s time to get those creative juices flowing and put your sculptural art-piece all together. Play around with the design before you get out the hot glue gun. You may find that you want to add more interest to the solid colors by pasting on a few embellishments you found at the craft store or maybe a stenciled design on one or two of the canvases. Have fun and play. If you don’t like the colors you’ve chosen, start over and repaint the canvases in different colors. You can also play with the metallic paints, black and white photo images and mirror chips for a more contemporary look.
And above all, relax and enjoy the process; you can’t make a mistake because there are no rules. And even if there were rules…they are always meant to be broken!
