Good for You
If you think green design is only for the granola-eating crowd, take another look.  Today's green products are as beautiful as they are environmentally friendly.

Okay, so it hasn't reached the tipping point, a term for the moment when an idea or social phenomenon reaches critical mass.  But environmentally sustainable product design is rapidly gaining attention.  In fact, green design has become a leading topic of discussion throughout a broad range of consumer goods companies that are coming to understand that healthy and sustainable manufacturing practices send meaningful purchase cues to consumers.

In the residential furnishings industry, a growing number of companies are dedicated to green manufacturing and/or eco-friendly materials.  Sources are emerging across the board, from fabric and furniture to lighting and window treatments.

To the surprise of skeptics, the green products being turned out are quite fashion-forward.  (Many commercial furniture companies and interior designers have been exploring the aesthetic appeal of green materials for years.)

Advocates point to green products' long term benefits, including the reduction of pollution and waste, improved water quality and the conservation of natural resources, which can be achieved through the use of natural fabrics, biodegradable dyes and wood harvested from tree farms that employ sustainable forestry-management practices.

Other benefits of eco-conscious home furnishings are more immediate.  To be green is to eliminate the use of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, a common adhesive in furniture manufacturing; polyurethane, a furniture sealant; organic pollutants, such as paint stripper and wood preservaties; and brominated flame retardants.

Green manufacturers hope to protect human health through their contributions to improved indoor air quality and overall healthier homes.  Now that's beautiful!
